How to Redo Your Garage Floor Coatings and When to Hire a Contractor

Epoxy paint application provides an easy improvement to your garage floor and driveway. Not only is epoxy stain-resistant and anti-skid but it is also easy to apply. However, applying epoxy paint in Arizona might be a little tricky because you have to account for the hot climate in order to prevent the hot tires from lifting the paint off the floor.

When done correctly, epoxy stands out among garage floor coatings. For best results, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Prep the garage

If you do not adequately prepare prior to your epoxy installation, the coating might chip or peel off almost as soon as it dries. Start by clearing all objects from the garage and then thoroughly sweeping it clean. You can use a leaf blower in order to get rid of any hidden dirt. Make use of a scrub brush and a heavy-duty degreaser to clean any gas and oil stains from the concrete. You should then carefully examine your floor for any chips on the concrete floor. Applying garage floor coatings on a chipped floor makes the coating less durable.

Once you are sure the floor is clean, apply concrete etch and citric acid in order to make tiny grooves in the concrete. This will help the epoxy to stick. Muriatic acid may also be used but you must be extremely careful because it is highly corrosive.

2. Apply your epoxy

Mix the two epoxy chemicals and apply the mixture on your floor. You may begin with trim areas using a two-inch brush and then cover the rest of the floor with a standard paint roller. A roller extender may come in handy at this stage. Please note that paint chips should be tossed onto the epoxy after it has been applied and not mixed in the can.

3. Allow it to dry

In Arizona weather, the epoxy should dry completely in a couple of hours but as a rule of thumb, leave it undisturbed for a night before you can attempt walking on it. Some epoxy floors might require more time to dry so it is best to refer to the manufacturer instructions.

For best results, avoid applying garage floor coatings on windy days or you will get leaves, twigs and other contaminants on your floor. Better still, hire a concrete coatings contractor from Dreamcoat Flooring, who are the Arizona experts in garage floor coatings.
